QLD: Mullet the vacuum cleaners of aquaculture
Mullet may become the low-cost vacuum cleaners for aquaculture, one of Australia's fastest
growing primary industries.
Queensland Department of Primary Industries scientist WAYNE KNIBB says sea mullet are being
tested to clean up the waste products from prawn farming.
Dr KNIBB says scientists evaluating the use of mullet and other fin fish are conducting a
number of on farm trials.
Prawn farmers rely on settlement ponds to improve their discharge water but scientists
believe mullet have a huge potential in bio-mediation, or treatment, of waste waters.
Dr KNIBB says mullet thrive in these conditions, can easily be removed, and represent a
valuable commercial crop.
Overseas trials suggest sea mullet rival carp and tilapia as effective consumers of algae,
plankton and prawn faeces, at low cost and with minimal maintenance.
