WA:Two overnight home invasions in Perth
PERTH, Aug 11 AAP - Home invaders have bashed an elderly couple in Perth and in another
incident a young couple barricaded themselves in their bedroom as intruders smashed through
their front door.
A 73-year-old man and his 68-year-old wife were at home in Maylands in Perth's inner
east at around 10.30pm (WST) on Wednesday when three men with towels covering their faces
forced their way in, police said.
The couple were punched in the head and threatened with a large screwdriver as the
offenders demanded money, Sergeant Gerry Cassidy said.
He said one offender stayed with the couple while the other two spent about an hour
ransacking their home before the trio fled with money, a mobile phone and a camera.
The couple were taken to hospital for treatment of head injuries.
In another home invasion only hours later at Morley in Perth's inner north early on
Thursday a young couple heard their front door being smashed in and quickly barricaded
themselves in their bedroom, Sgt Cassidy said.
When the offenders could not get in through the bedroom door they went back outside
and smashed the bedroom window, he said.
The couple called police from their bedroom and the offenders fled before officers arrived.
Police were investigating whether the two attacks were committed by the same offenders.

NSW: Parents "robbing kids of childhood"
SYDNEY, Feb 20 AAP - The majority of Australians think well-meaning parents are robbing
their children of the joys of childhood, a new study has found.
More than 80 per cent of people polled online for the The Australian Scholarships Group
(ASG) believe parents are scheduling too many activities for their children.
Of the 249 respondents, only 46 people felt parents allowed children the time to enjoy
their childhood.

FED:Australian, Afghan troops capture rebel
CANBERRA, April 15 AAP - An operation by Afghan and Australian special forces has resulted
in the capture of a high-level insurgent commander.
Coalition forces have been targeting insurgent commanders and infrastructure in the
lead-up to the summer fighting season.
In joint operations last month 10 insurgent leaders and bombmakers were either killed
or captured.
In the latest operation, soldiers of the Afghan Provincial Response Company (PRC-U)
and the Australian Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) detained an insurgent described
as a highly influential district-level commander.
The capture occurred during a clearance mission in the Khod Valley region on April
8 with a number of insurgents detained.
One was later identified as a district-level commander.
Chief of Australian Defence Force joint operations Lieutenant General Mark Evans said
the commander was prolific in facilitating insurgency activities throughout southern Afghanistan.
"The man has direct links to the senior leadership of the insurgency and is a highly
influential commander," he said in a statement.
"He was in charge of insurgent operations in the Char Chineh district and is also responsible
for supplying weapons and fighters throughout Shahid-e Hassas."
The man has now been transferred to a detention facility in Parwan that is operating
under Australian control.
Lieutenant General Evans said his removal would severely disrupt planned insurgent
operations, particularly in western Oruzgan province, and reduce attacks on coalition
and local forces.
He said recent efforts had resulted in a significant blow to the insurgents' ability
to plant improvised explosive devices and prepare for the coming fighting season.
"The insurgency in Oruzgan is now less capable after a winter period where many of
its caches were discovered and destroyed," he said in a statement.
"As a result, the insurgency will now find it more difficult to construct home-made
bombs and attack civilian and International Security Assistance Force targets."
Lieutenant General Evans said Afghan forces, backed by Australian troops, were doing
a brilliant job of increasing security and placing hard-line insurgent elements under
incredible pressure.
"We saw the provincial governor recently accept the reintegration of 45 former fighters
back into their local communities. There is a way out for those who choose to take it."

NSW:Eight children in home when gunman fired
A gunman is on the run after wounding a young girl when he fired nearly a dozen bullets
into family home in Sydney's southwest.
The 11-year-old girl was hit in the right thigh when the man fired into the house in
Roberts Road in Greenacre late last night .. while a 16 year old boy injured his foot
avoiding the shots .. there were six other children in the house at the time.
Police say the father of the children answered the door and spoke to the gunman ..
soon after he closed the door he heard about 11 shots.
Police Superintendent DAVID EARDLEY says it was probably a case of mistaken identity
or mistaken address because the law abiding and well respected family have lived at the
home for a long time.
The gunman is believed to be about 20 years old .. 175cm tall .. possibly of Pacific
Islander appearance and with a large build.
Police say a red Holden Commodore .. which was found on fire soon after the shooting
in nearby Shellcote Road .. may also be linked to the crime.

NSW:174 kilos of drug chemical seized
SYDNEY, Aug 18 AAP - The seizure of $74 million worth of pseudoephedrine, the key
ingredient in the manufacture of ice, will have "a significant impact" on the drug trade
on Sydney's streets, police believe.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) arrested a 25-year-old Chipping Norton man and
a 44-year-old Bonnyrigg man on Tuesday night in connection with the haul, which police
say could have manufactured 130 kilograms of methamphetamine, or ice.
Following intelligence from the Australian Crime Commission, Customs officials screening
cargo containers at Botany Bay identified approximately 174kg of pseudoephedrine hidden
in coffee sachets from Vietnam.
The two men, described by the AFP as "significant targets" in a highly organised international
criminal syndicate, were arrested as they left a residence at Heckenberg in Sydney's south-west
on Tuesday.
A search of the property and other locations subsequently uncovered the chemicals in
what the AFP is calling one of the largest hauls of pseudoephedrine in Australian history.
Police believe further arrests will follow as the investigation continues.
The deputy manager of the AFP's Sydney office, Mick Kelsey, said the manufacture of
ice in clandestine laboratories had been on the rise in Australia in the past few years
and posed an increasing threat to communities.
"Makeshift laboratories, such as where this pseudoephedrine was headed, pose a real
threat to the community and to the people living in the community, not to mention the
people that are actually attempting to manufacture the narcotics," Superintendent Kelsey
said.
The two men are due to appear before Sydney Central Local Court on Wednesday charged
with importing and attempting to possess drugs.

FED: ATSIC replacement due by end of 2009
By Bonny Symons-Brown
CANBERRA, Aug 27 AAP - The federal government has committed to establishing a new indigenous
body to replace the defunct ATSIC by the end of the year.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) was abolished by the Howard
government in 2005.
A replacement model will be presented to Labor on Thursday by Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma.
Hours before the plan's unveiling, Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin said the
new body would be established before the end 2009.
But she would not be drawn on how much influence the advisory organisation - which
won't administer funds, deliver programs or have legislative powers - would have on the
government.
"What we have always said is that we will not be creating another ATSIC," she told
reporters in Canberra.
"I made it clear at the start of this process that we would not accept a body that
had responsibility for service delivery."
Nor would Ms Macklin say whether she wanted to see the body made up of elected members
from indigenous communities.
"That's a matter that I wanted indigenous people to consider," she said.
Ms Macklin defended the intensive consultations behind Mr Calma's proposal, following
reports prominent indigenous leaders Galarrwuy Yunupingu and Noel Pearson did not participate
in talks.
"As I understand it, there has been extensive consultation," she said.
"There's certainly been opportunity for many, many people to make a contribution."
It will be a full day for the minister who will also be hearing from the United Nations
special rapporteur on indigenous human rights, Professor James Anaya.
Prof Anaya has spent the past 10 days travelling around Australia examining human rights
and fundamental freedoms in remote indigenous communities.
"I think he will have come back to Canberra today with a very significant understanding
of the significant pressures facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in this
country," Ms Macklin said.
Prof Anaya earlier this month said the Howard government's suspension of the Racial
Discrimination Act to enable the Northern Territory intervention to proceed was superficially
discriminatory.
Ms Macklin said Labor had committed to reinstating the operation of the Act in the
NT and the legislation would be introduced to parliament later this year.

Qld: 48 nabbed in north Qld drug raids
BRISBANE, Dec 12 AAP - Police have charged 48 people with drug offences after raiding
71 properties in and around Townsville.
Police said more than 1,000 ecstasy tablets bound for north Queensland nightclubs were seized.
The raids, carried out on Thursday and Friday targeted the supply of ecstasy and speed
within licensed premises.
Cash, cannabis and a relatively small amount of speed were also seized.
Police said 150 charges had been laid against 48 people.
Three of the 48 face trafficking charges.
The majority of those arrested will face the Townsville Magistrates Court on January 9.
Superintendent John Pointing said the operation has been a big success.
"(It) shows that we are and will continue to be committed to tracking down those who
traffic these drugs in licensed premises filled with young people," he said.
The operation also involved the Australian Customs Service and Queensland Corrective Services.

Oly: Permanently ban drug cheats from Olympics, Grigorieva says

Oly: Permanently ban drug cheats from Olympics, Grigorieva says
SYDNEY, Aug 9 AAP - Athletes should not be indiscriminately labelled as drug cheats
but those who do test positive should be permanently banned from the Olympics, says Australian
pole vaulting champion, Tatiana Grigorieva.
The Sydney Olympic silver medallist has described Australian runner Tamsyn Lewis' recent
accusation that her competitors are drug cheats as "very unfair" and suggests she leave
doping matters to the experts.
"It is a very big call to accuse someone on suspicion only," Grigorieva wrote on her
online blog three days ago.
"So unless people have been caught and have been disqualified, I think it is very unfair
to the clean competitors to say that I will look left and right and know the other girls
aren't clean.
"Plus we do have a body that has been put together to control and monitor drug usage in sport.
"They do it for a living so I think it would be better to leave it to them."
Lewis, an 800m specialist, this week said doping had taken over the sport and demanded
testing authorities do more to catch cheats.
"I have no doubts that when I line up next week on the start line, I will look left
and right and know the other girls aren't all clean," she said.
While athletes must be presumed innocent, once they are proven guilty of doping they
should be banned from the Olympics, Grigorieva says, pointing to US 100m hurdler Damu
Cherry, who served a two-year ban for doping violations and will face Australia's Sally
McLellan on the track in Beijing.
"These people need to be banned from the Olympics," she writes.
"I believe that once you have used before you would never go back to being clean.
"Those athletes who have been banned in the past should not be competing at the highest level.
"I want to quote my good friend (international athletics agent) Maurie Plant who said
what a shame for the sport, for the athlete and the country if Sally is denied a medal
by a cheat!"
Grigorieva says although the drug testing procedure can be embarrassing, it is an excepted
part of an athlete's life.
"In the beginning it is quite shameful having to go to the loo in front of someone
you don't know and will probably never see again but it is part of it," she says.
Athletes should not get carried away with distractions but remain focused on their
performance, Grigorieva says.
"There is no point worrying about things you can't change," she writes.
"All you can change is your own performance."

NSW:Unions NSW called on to act responsibly over Currawong
By Samantha Baden, Industrial Reporter
SYDNEY, Feb 15 AAP - Unions NSW must ensure the sale of an historic Sydney workers'
holiday camp does not threaten its heritage value or its availability to union members,
a protest group says.
Accessible only by water, the Currawong camp is a 23-hectare bushland and beachfront
property on the edge of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park at the northern end of Pittwater,
near Palm Beach.
Unions NSW, the owner, last August called for expressions of interest in Currawong,
which comprises nine fibro cabins, one homestead and a conference centre.
The waterfront property was bought in 1949 to commemorate the creation of the 40 hour
week and to provide a low-cost holiday destination for union members.
However, Unions NSW says it needs to sell the property, valued at more than $11 million,
to fund the fight against the federal government's industrial relations changes.
Friends of Currawong (FoC), the protest group that fought the attempted sale of the
site seven years ago, is now calling on Unions NSW to ensure whoever buys the property
protects its heritage and environmental value.
FoC co-convenor Shane Withington said he was worried the land would be sold to a developer
and workers would be excluded from the site.
FoC wants the NSW Heritage Office to approve an application by Pittwater Council, lodged
in 1999, to include the property on the state's heritage list, which would protect it
from development.
"There's no doubt that this is a priceless piece of Australian culture that deserves
to be preserved and protected in every way and if the heritage office can't see that then
heads should role," Mr Withington says.
"I'm pretty sure your average rank and file unionist would much rather have Currawong
than flog off this priceless asset and then throw it into the coffers of some advertising
agency."
The FoC said it accepted the property was now on the market, but wanted to see it sold
responsibly.
"What we have said to (Unions NSW) is we are asking (it) to be pro-active, and to actually
meet with (Pittwater) Council and to work out a publicly responsible solution to the management
and disposal of this property," FoC co-convenor Jo Holder says.
Ms Holder said the ideal situation would be for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife
Service or Pittwater Council to manage the property as a low-cost destination that would
recognise its heritage and cultural value.
"All we want to see is ... its significance to the union movement and working people
is preserved," she said
A Unions NSW spokesman said a number of expressions of interest over Currawong were
being assessed.
Comment was being sought from the NSW Heritage Office and Pittwater Council.

ResMed Announces Partnership with National Stroke Association.
SAN DIEGO, May 15 /PRNewswire/ --
ResMed Inc. (NYSE: RMD) announced that it has entered into a partnership with the National Stroke Association (NSA, Englewood, CO) to promote awareness of the high prevalence of sleep disordered breathing in stroke patients. Stroke is the number one cause of disability and the number three cause of death in the US, costing the community billions of healthcare dollars annually. The initiative will include joint development of educational tools directed to both patients and health care professionals. The program will be launched by an article on Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) to be featured in NSA's "Be Stroke Smart" Newsletter and collaboration on brochures such as "Post-Stroke Sleep Disorders," targeted for publication this quarter. The NSA is also developing a ResMed sponsored page on its web site devoted to SDB. Various symposia and conferences are in the planning stages.
There are over 4 million stroke patients in the U.S. alone, and an incidence of 1 million each year (including 300,000 mini-strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)). The incidence of SDB in stroke patients approaches 65%, a level 5 times that of age-matched control patients (Bassetti and Aldrich, Sleep 1999). SDB is also associated with worse functional outcomes after three and twelve months and higher mortality after one year following a stroke (Good, et al. Stroke 1996). SDB is associated with several known risk factors for primary and secondary stroke such as systemic and pulmonary hypertension (see below), atrial fibrillation, increased fibrinogen levels, and decreased cerebral blood flow. Based on preliminary studies, treatment of SDB in stroke patients using autotitrating nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure is expected to improve outcomes and quality of life.
This partnership is an important step in reducing the incidence and impact of stroke according to NSA. "National Stroke Association is committed to increasing public awareness about stroke and life-saving measures, as well as improving the outcomes of 4 million survivors living with the effects of stroke," said Patti Shwayder, NSA Executive Director/CEO. "This relationship will allow NSA to provide much needed information and education about SDB to the public and medical professionals."
National Stroke Association is a leading independent national nonprofit organization devoting 100% of its resources and efforts to stroke -- including prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and support for stroke survivors and their families. For more information on stroke, contact National Stroke Association at 1-800-STROKES (1-800-787-6537) or visit www.stroke.org on the Internet.
In a related development, last Thursday, the New England Journal of Medicine published results of an eight-year study on 709 people showing that even mild to moderate levels of SDB produced a substantial risk of hypertension; and the more severe the SDB, the greater the likelihood of developing hypertension. As stated above, hypertension is inexorably linked to consequent increased risk of stroke and also to heart disease. Dr. Paul Peppard and the other members of the study found that people with mild to moderate sleep apnea were twice as likely to become hypertensive and people with moderate to severe sleep apnea were almost three times as likely to become hypertensive. This landmark study highlights the increased need for treatment of SDB in the general population, where less than 10% of those affected in the U.S. have been diagnosed or treated.
ResMed is a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of medical equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disordered breathing, selling a comprehensive range of products in over 50 countries. SkyTel Offers Prepaid Alpha Paging Package; Product Complements Successful Prepaid Numeric Paging.
JACKSON, Miss.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 19, 1998--SkyTel Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: SKYT) is now offering prepaid alpha paging through its distribution partners. The prepaid alpha product complements SkyTel's prepaid numeric paging product launched successfully last fall.
"SkyTel is the only paging company to offer true usage-based prepaid paging nationwide," said Craig Hagopian, marketing director of SkyTel's Consumer Products Group. "And with prepaid alpha added to our product line, we will introduce paging to a whole new market."
As with SkyTel's prepaid numeric product, prepaid alpha paging provides the convenience of paging without the commitment of ongoing contracts, monthly bills, credit applications, deposits or separate activation fees. Therefore, it is ideal for businesses and individuals with short-term or infrequent paging needs.
"According to a recent study by the Yankee Group, over 17 percent of pager users are interested in prepaid paging," Hagopian said. "It givespeople a way to control expenses with no additional billing."
Two prepaid alpha packages are available. One package features a Motorola Wordline pager, while the other features a Beepwear pager watch. Both include a personal 1-800 number, custom greeting, Page Recall and 500 service credits good for up to three months. Users can also select features such as nationwide service, Caller ID, and operator dispatch on incoming pages. When a person uses these optional features, the corresponding number of service credits are deducted from the balance, which is displayed on the pager. Additionally, prepaid alpha customers receive news, sports and weather updates on their pagers at no additional cost. Customers can enjoy all these services for about a nickel per service credit and can purchase recharge cards for additional service credits.
"Because these packages and all these features are flexible, inexpensive and conveniently bundled together in a box, the purchasing decision is easy for people to make," Hagopian said. "Prepaid services are becoming increasingly popular in telecommunications, and we are certainly seeing that trend with our paging. The nature of this package makes it very attractive for the distribution partners who sell our products."
For SkyTel's distribution partners and other high-volume customers, the prepaid product has distinct advantages. The broadcast messaging capability enables a company to simultaneously communicate to a large audience. The single nationwide frequency means that one model works everywhere. And the product can be customized with specific logos.
SkyTel Communications, Inc., headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is a leader in wireless messaging, serving more than 1.4 million customers. Since 1989, the company has led the paging sector towards true nationwide messaging through a series of innovations that culminated in SkyTel two-way interactive messaging service. This service enables customers to exchange messages with other pagers and receive messages via e-mail and the Internet. More information about the company is available at www.skytel.com or by calling 1-800-643-0323.

MTN Satellite Communications and ERZIA Announce Completion of Santander Teleport in Spain.
Teleport Offers Commercial and Government Organizations Access to C-, Ku-Band and Secure X-Band Services from a Single Location
MIRAMAR, Fla., April 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- MTN Satellite Communications (MTN), the global provider of communications, connectivity and content services to remote locations around the world, and ERZIA, the leading provider of VSAT maritime communications in Spain, today announced that their joint venture to develop a teleport in Santander Spain has been completed and is officially open. It now serves as a centralized gateway for MTN's VSAT communications with coverage over the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The facility is located in Santander, North Spain at 43 degrees 27'46''N, 3 degrees 48'18''W.
The new facility is one of the first in the world to provide C- and Ku-band commercial service as well as secure X-band service for government customers at a single location. The Santander teleport can see all of the satellites in the GEO orbit from 60W to 65E, thus covering a region from Western Australia to North America, Mediterranean Sea, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Importantly, the new teleport is strategically located in the intersection of the coverage of Xtar satellites, therefore able to uplink and downlink from both X-band satellites.
"The combined resources of MTN and ERZIA within the Santander teleport offer efficient and innovative managed networking technologies from a new and far reaching international satellite gateway," said Richard Hadsall, CTO at MTN. "Our intent is that this new facility will lift the whole industry to a far more competitive position by creating attractive opportunities for not only MTN but for Spanish and European service providers, enterprise and even consumer subscribers."
The Santander teleport provides a significant improvement in network efficiency, reliability, and customer service that augments the MTN worldwide infrastructure of redundant teleports and dedicated fiber optic links. In addition, it has a fully manned 24/7 network operations center providing European time zone coverage and local language operators to deliver quality service to global customers.

Smells like tough times; city view.(Business)
There is nothing like a recession to precipitate a bout of thinking the unthinkable.
Across the business world, company bosses are going beyond lateral in an attempt to find a solution to their ills.
For some sectors it is a case of battening down the hatches, reducing costs and doing the necessary to come out the other side.
But there are other sectors facing such fundamental shifts that reducing headcount and easing back on the fig rolls is no longer going to cut it.
An obvious case in point would be our very own media industry which, on top of the worst recession in living memory, is being forced into a structural realignment by the blessed internet. The best brains in the business can still not make it pay.
We are by no means alone. Any industry where services can be provided more cheaply (or free) online is going through a period to whiten the hair of even the most seasoned executive.
One sector with potentially the most to lose from the digital revolution is the music industry, and while it fights tooth and nail with the file-sharing community in an attempt to protect the lion's share of its wealth-generating capacity, it is also embracing initiatives that would have been unthinkable even a few short year's ago.
This week it was announced that the fifth edition of gaming phenomenon Guitar Hero would feature a likeness of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, as well as two of his best known tracks after a licensing deal had been struck with the dead rock star's estate.
Since its launch, Guitar Hero - which allows players to mimic rock legends on computerised instruments - has been one of the fastest-growing computer games and its success has been in no small part due to the fact that it has managed to persuade some of the biggest names in the industry to sign over their music for the game.
Previous versions of the game already featured lesser-known Nirvana tracks, but the signing over of Cobain's likeness as well as the licence to Smells Like Teen Spirit undoubtedly makes good business sense but will be seen by many fans as sacrilegious at best.
Also this week we discover that Mariah Carey's latest album is set to be sponsored by the Bahamas Board of Tourism and beauty product companies which have covered its $4 million cost. Under the terms of the "product integration" deal, the album will come with a glossy 34-page booklet full of ads for brands like Elizabeth Arden and Angel pink champagne - a first for the industry.
Undoubtedly desperate times call for desperate measures, but one can't help but wonder where it will all end. Next thing you know they'll be naming an airport after one of the Beatles.

Happy Puppy and Microsoft team up to give away "Two Explorers"; new promotion kicks off Oct. 15.
NAPLES, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 1996--Happy Puppy, the number one games site on the World Wide Web, Tuesday announced the launch of its new "The Happy Explorer" promotion.
The three month contest, beginning on Oct. 15, 1996 and running through Jan. 15, 1997, enables users who download Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0 to register for the contest to win a brand new 1997 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, in addition to many other prizes.
"We wanted Microsoft to be more than a sponsor on Happy Puppy's site; we wanted to form a strategic partnership with Happy Puppy," said Sean Simon, media planner at Microsoft's Interactive advertising agency, Anderson & Lembke. "Their users have a firm understanding of the benefits Microsoft's Internet Explorer gives them in their gaming experience, in addition to their total Internet experience."
Similarly, Curtis Giesen, vice president of sales and marketing for Happy Puppy, feels that "by developing a customized marketing program with Microsoft and Anderson & Lembke, Happy Puppy will also be able to help build a customer relationship that cannot be duplicated through traditional media."
The "The Happy Explorer" promotion is limited to one entry per household. Registrants are eligible for various levels of prizes. One grand prize winner will receive a new 1997 Ford Explorer; three second place winners will each receive an ultimate multimedia PC with one winner selected every month; and third place winners will each be awarded with various Microsoft game titles throughout the promotion.

Recently, Business Week cited Happy Puppy's 35 percent growth in ad sales per month since May as "a mecca for advertisers pushing everything from games to MTV to Sunny Delight juice."
"Happy Puppy is aggressively pursuing the unique interactive opportunities of the Web," said Giesen. "We view ourselves as a new media advertising laboratory, and we are currently working on some very innovative formulas with some of the most aggressive marketers on the Web."
Launched in February 1995, Happy Puppy is part of the Attitude Network, which develops dominant media brands in specific areas of interest.
