Breakfast Round-Up: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AAP RTV FILE AT 0430
Cricket Aust (NOTTINGHAM, England)
Australia has retained the Ashes after beating England by seven wickets in the third
Test at Trent Bridge.
Australia bowled England out for 162 in the second innings.
That left the tourists needing 158 for victory.
The winning run came from an ANDREW CADDICK no-ball, with MARK WAUGH unbeaten on 42
and DAMIEN MARTYN 33.
The run chase took a dramatic twist when Australian captain STEVE WAUGH was taken from
the field on a stretcher with a calf injury.
Vice-captain ADAM GILCHRIST led the tourists for the post-match presentation.
He says winning the oldest trophy in the game is a treasured moment.
Mideast Fatah (JERUSALEM)
Palestinians are being urged to take to the streets of every town and village to protest
against the latest Israeli missile attack on one of their leaders.
The Fatah movement of Palestinian leader YASSER ARAFAT wants people to demonstrate
en masse against the Israeli policy of attacking leaders suspected of planning attacks
on the Jewish state.
The Palestinian Authority says Fatah's MARWAN BARGHUTI escaped when three missiles
were launched by a helicopter against his convoy of cars in Ramallah in the West Bank.
But Israeli army radio says the attack was in fact targeted at another Fatah activist,
wanted after the killing of eight Israelis, who suffered burns in the attack.
Israel accuses the Palestinians of refusing to crack down on militants responsible
for attacks against Israelis.
Last week an Israeli rocket attack killed six members of the hardline group Hamas along
with two young boys.
Hacking (SYDNEY)
It's reported the computer of a New South Wales Labor MP has been used to hack into
Opposition computers to read private documents.
The Sun-Herald says the matter is set to rock state parliament -- with the MP's terminal
impounded by Parliament's information technology unit.
The paper says a preliminary inquiry has established that the terminal of a leading
Liberal MP was breached and his private documents copied.
But Legislative Council president MEREDITH BURGMANN and Clerk of the Parliament JOHN
EVANS both refuse to discuss the incident.
Cars (SYDNEY)
A meeting today between unions and employers may resolve the dispute crippling Australia's
automotive industry and threatening to spread to other sectors.
Three of the country's four major car makers have been forced to stand down workers
after a week-long strike by 300 workers at TriStar Steering and Suspension in Sydney.
At the heart of the dispute is a refusal by TriStar management to sign on to Manusafe,
a trust fund unions say will protect workers' entitlements.
Balloon (SYDNEY)
American millionaire STEVE FOSSETT was overnight preparing to launch his around-the-world
balloon trip by sunrise in Western Australia.
A spokesperson says he has spent the night waiting for the wind to die down.
It will be Fossett's fifth attempt at becoming the first person to make the solo journey.
The last attempt to inflate his balloon Solo Spirit for a launch from the gold mining
town of Kalgoorlie in June ended in disaster when a freak wind tore the balloon apart.
Phil Kidnap Behead (MANILA)
Muslim extremists in the Philippines have beheaded four more captives.
That brings to eight the number killed since they raided a village and abducted 36 people.
An official says four decapitated bodies have been recovered.
The discoveries come as police and soldiers pursue the Abu Sayyaf guerrillas who raided
the village on Basilan island two days ago.
Kashmir kidnap (JAMMU)
Police in India say separatist Muslim guerrillas are believed to have killed 17 Hindu
villagers in the troubled Jammu and Kashmir state.
However muslim militant groups have accused Indian security forces of themselves being
behind the incident.
Violence has escalated in the Himalayan region since a summit last month between India
and Pakistan failed to produce concrete results.
Yugo guerrillas (BUJANOVAC)
Two Serbian policemen have been killed and two wounded along the southern border with
Kosovo -- in the most serious incident since a May peace plan halted attacks by ethnic
Albanian guerrillas.
The policemen were attacked while on patrol in the village of Muhovac in the area of
southern Serbia that borders UN-administered Kosovo.
The Serbian government blames the attack on ethnic Albanian extremists.
US TERMINAL (New York)
A man travelling on a bus in the United States has shot four passengers.
Authorities say he opened fire as the bus pulled into a Manhattan terminal - but the
victims' injuries are not life threatening.
The man was arrested shortly after the shooting.
Hancock (PERTH)
The inquest into the death of mining tycoon LANG HANCOCK is set to shift up a gear
when it resumes tomorrow.
West Australian coroner ALASTAIR HOPE is poised to hear from the dead magnate's widow
ROSE PORTEOUS and his daughter GINA RINEHART, who alleges Ms PORTEOUS' behaviour killed
her father.
An autopsy has found that 82-year-old HANCOCK died nine years ago from natural causes
-- but the coroner has heard a catalogue of tales which paint Ms PORTEOUS as a manipulative
woman who had married the ailing tycoon for his money and was angry he was taking so long
to die.
However a sacked RINEHART operative has told the court the tycoon's daughter paid witnesses
- and the coroner has been told that key evidence that PORTEOUS allegedly wanted to hire
a hitman is fabricated.
Aths Name SYDNEY)
Federal Veterans Affairs Minister BRUCE SCOTT has welcomed the decision by Athletics
Australia to drop the use of the name "Diggers" for its team.
He says the decision represents a positive and sensible outcome -- with all Australians
behind the Australian athletics team as they compete in the world championships.
Athletics Australia has bowed to public pressure -- after objections to the team using
a name associated with soldiers.
Royals Mother (LONDON)
The Queen Mother has celebrated her 101st birthday, greeting hundreds of wellwishers
in her usual sprightly style just days after being treated in hospital for anaemia.
The Queen Mother was admitted to hospital on Wednesday suffering from anaemia and discharged
the next day after a blood transfusion.
And Prince CHARLES was on hand for the celebrations, after leaving hospital following
a polo accident yesterday.
It's not believed the prince has broken anything after falling off his horse.
CROWE TOFOG (Sydney)
Oscar-winning actor RUSSELL CROWE has made a surprise appearance with his band at
a venue in Sydney.
CROWE and the band - Thirty Odd Foot Of Grunt - were scheduled to kick off their world
tour at a sell-out gig tonight at Coffs Harbour in northern New South Wales.
But last night he scheduled a low-key performance at popular Sydney jazz club The Basement.
The band appeared at the Australian Online Music Awards, delighting a packed and surprised house.
CROWE's band will begin a sell-out US tour next week.
