Fed: Aust explores trial options over people smuggling tragedy

CANBERRA, Feb 5 AAP - The government remained determined to bring from Indonesia anEgyptian fugitive to face trial in Australia over the drowning of 353 boat people, JusticeMinister Chris Ellison said today.

Australian officials were exploring options with Indonesia for Mootaz Muhammad Hasan,alias Abu Quassey, being brought to Australia to stand trial over the tragedy in October2001.

Quassey, who was jailed in Indonesia for visa violations, is accused of organisingthe smuggling of mostly Iraqi and Afghan asylum seekers in an overcrowded boat that sankenroute …
