The additives market has taken advantage of the chief forces driving the overall paints and coatings industry--ever tightening environmental regulations and globalization of the marketplace--to produce a wider array of materials. From light stabilizers to algaecides, demand is also rising for high-performance additives.
The volume of additives in systems has typically been low, but the importance of the value-added properties additives provide--such as corrosion resistance and flow control--is increasing. Additives suppliers say paint and coating formulators are more willing than ever to pay a premium for high-performance additives that last longer, because over time they save the labor, time, and money spent on recoating.
Additives are growing about 1.5% faster than the paints and coatings industry, which is growing about 3%-4%/year, says Ed Antonucci, v.p./chemical additives at Ashland Chemical's Drew Industrial division.
